General Information About Head & Neck Cancer

image

Head and neck cancers are common in the Indian subcontinent, and oral cavity cancers (oral squamous cell carcinoma [OSCC]) is the most common among them. Oral cancer is most predominant in tobacco chewers.

Despite of all the modalities of treatment theoverall 5 years survival rate of oral cancer is 50%.The most common reason of treatment failure is recurrence of disease. The recurrence can be either locoregional recurrence that is cancer comes back to the same place where it started or comes back to lymph nodes it drained. Or there can be distant metastasis i.e cancer comes back somewhere else or at a distant site from the primary tumour.Recurrence is known to occur in about 35% of patients treated for oral cancer .
